Some enchanted island

Some enchanted island

Escape to paradise at the heavenly Kurumba Maldives...

As far removed from everyday life as you could imagine, the Maldives is made up of more than a thousand tiny coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean. Crystal-clear waters, pristine white sand, endless sunshine and the most luxurious resorts on earth make it the ultimate honeymoon hotspot, perfect for couples seeking a relaxing and totally indulgent break.

Beautiful beginnings

Located on the North Male Atoll, Kurumba Maldives was the first resort in the Maldives, so they’ve had years of experience in perfecting the place. It’s close to the capital and only a 10-minute speed boat journey from the airport, so it’s the ideal resort if you want to avoid lengthy transfers after the long flight from the UK. Of course you’ll forget all about the journey when you arrive.

The island is surrounded by a turquoise lagoon teeming with mesmerising marine life and the water is so clear that all you have to do is look down from the jetty to see shoals of colourful fi sh, or even a stingray. The friendly staff will make you feel welcome, helping you off the boat, placing a garland of flowers around your neck and presenting you with a refreshing cocktail before whisking you off to your love nest.

Rooms for romance

The pool villas are a must for honeymooners. These wonderfully appointed rooms are all about intimacy and indulgence and provide the perfect start to married life. The villa is decorated in a crisp modern palette of cream and contemporary dark wood, with lots of space and breathtaking views. The  bedroom has a blissfully comfortable four-poster bed, while the wall of floor-to-ceiling doors slide back to reveal your living room, complete with armchairs, sofas, TV and even your own wine fridge.

Through the French doors is the expanse of decking, complete with wooden sun loungers and a decadent day bed. The beach constantly beckons, thanks to the gently lapping water, and the surrounding palms providing the perfect natural shade. There’s even a cleverly disguised shower if you need an instant cool down after a steamy day in the tropical sun.

Back inside, the walk-in dressing room offers masses of storage together with a packed mini bar (including sun cream!) and top-of-the-range coffee machine. The dressing room leads to the sumptuous bathroom with a double bath, separate shower, his ’n’ hers sinks and two doors onto the garden. Outside is an enticing pool with its own mini waterfall wall and Jacuzzi jets option, as well as an alfresco rain shower which no honeymooner should miss – try it at night under the gaze of the stars for a magical sensory experience.

Dream days

You may find it hard to tear yourselves away from your own stretch of beach during your honeymoon at Kurumba, with your biggest decisions being whether you and your new husband should sit dipping your toes in the warm water, or relax on a sun lounger in the shade. But there’s actually plenty to do. A visit to the Aquum Spa for a couple’s treatment is a must – a few hours at the hands of their talented therapists will leave you both feeling renewed. Or, if you fancy something a little
more energetic, try the activities on offer, from snorkelling and glass-bottom boat tours to jet ski safaris and scuba-diving.

At dusk, head back out into the ocean on a romantic sunset cruise for Champagne and canapes. And keep your eyes peeled for pods of dolphins, which you’re certain to spot. One of the most appealing things about Kurumba is the relaxed atmosphere. This is a resort where there is no need to pack fancy frocks. Most evenings begin at the Beach Bar sipping on a Kurumba Coconut Mojito  served in a young coconut. After dinner, recline on one of the comfy bean bags by the open-air pavilion where live bands and DJs play chilled out tunes.

Decadent dining

The Maldives are known for their wonderful fresh seafood, and the Kurumba chefs have mastered the perfect ways to serve delicious lobster, tuna steaks and giant prawns at the Ocean Grill. There are many other restaurants to choose from such as La Cucina which serves first-class Italian cuisine and Ming Court which offers fantastic Chinese recipes. But perhaps the ultimate dining experience while on your honeymoon at Kurumba is eating a sumptuous ‘Sounds of the Sea’ dinner on the beach with your new husband. Sitting under a pergola made from hand-woven leaves, surrounded by candles, you’ll be served by discreet waiters then left to soak up the romantic ambience under the canopy of stars. Pure heaven.
