Awks - the nation's most popular wedding dance song is actually a break-up anthem

Tissues at the ready, people

The first dance is one of the (many) highlight moments of a wedding: a sweet, tender moment shared by the newlyweds as they twirl around the dancefloor in front of their friends and family.

However, new research has found one of the UK's most popular first dance tunes is actually a break-up anthem

The 15 songs that will keep your guest on the dancefloor all night

Research by Dancewear Central found Whitney Houston's karaoke-friendly I Will Always Love You is the nation's favourite first dance song - despite the song famously being one of the world's most iconic break-up tunes.

In a survey of 1,000 people, 22% voted for the song as their favourite; Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud followed with 17.05% of the vote, with the Dirty Dancing anthem Time Of My Life bringing up the rear with 15.08% of the vote.

At Last by Etta James (14.45%), Angels by Robbie Williams (11.49%), I'm Yours by Jason Mraz (9.75%) and A Thousand Years by Christina Perri (9.52%) also scored favourably with those quizzed.

As well as pitch-perfect music choices, Brits are increasingly looking to nail a wow-worthy routine for their first dance.

Faye Nash, Marketing Manager at Dancewear Central, commented: "For many couples, the first dance at a wedding can be a really nerve-wracking experience, injecting personality or humour through a choreographed dance is one way to ensure they’ll make a lasting impression and rehearsing their steps will help ease their jitters. For some, the practice and training it takes to learn their first dance could even ignite a passion for dancing they didn’t know they had!"
