"I’d say we did a fair bit of DIY, which I enjoyed each weekend with my mum and bridesmaids..."
Lauren Jackson, 27, a media account director, and James Adcock, 28, a behaviour analyst, became husband and wife at Blake Hall, Ongar, Essex.

James and I met at school 10 years ago. We live together in Essex, so it made sense to get married there.
We looked at a number of barns as we wanted our wedding to be easily accessible for our loved ones and for all of it to be in one place. I fell in love with Blake Hall and how relaxed and unassuming it was – and the staff were lovely, too.
I loved the mix of the recently refurbished modern barn that we got married in, and the 18th century barn that we held our reception in. We actually booked the venue before James had seen it, because both of the mums and I loved it so much!
Our colour scheme changed throughout the two year planning process – we started with ‘English country garden’ as the basis of our theme and looked to include nothing but pastels, jam jars, lots of lavender and rustic ladders, but the allure of sparkly things got to me and I added some gold sequin runners on the tables, sprayed a few things gold and added gold glass tea-light holders and cream crystal candelabras to the tables.
The flowers were really important to me as I think they play a huge role in any wedding, but as we had gone for a country garden theme, I really wanted flowers to play a central role on the day.
Our florist, Karen from The Flower Mill, did such an amazing job. She totally got what I wanted for the country garden theme. I had an oversized bouquet of ivory, and pale pink roses with lilac and lavender.
My bridesmaids held bouquets of dried lavender hand-tied with ivory ribbon. We then filled our hand decorated jam jars with flowers for the table centrepieces and Karen sourced two huge milk churns that sat either side of the aisle during the ceremony and a flower heart that was suspended above our ceremony table and behind the top table.
I’d say we did a fair bit of DIY, which I enjoyed each weekend with my mum and bridesmaids – we made the favours, which were lavender scented candles. We also hand decorated all of the jam jars used on the tables and the tulle backdrop to the guest table. My mum also spent countless hours hand-stitching metres of bunting, which looked so beautiful and is a great keepsake.
One of my favourite moments was dancing in the evening with all of our friends and family.
Another thing that really made me laugh was when James was very keen saying his vows and said ‘yeah’ instead of ‘I do’!
My tip for brides-to-be: Hire a videographer. I feel like it’s one of the first things that gets knocked off the list of must haves, but watching our wedding video brings it all back to us like it was yesterday.
