A relaxed rustic wedding at Gate Street Barn in Guildford

Samantha and Simon filled their wedding with flowers, sparklers and cosy autumn details

Samantha King, 32, a full-time mum, and Simon Hamilton, 34, an IT Sales Executive, held both their ceremony and reception at Gate Street Barn in Bramley, Guildford.

Simon and I got engaged in Paris. I thought I was invited along to a work trip, but it turned out to be a surprise mini break! One evening after dinner, he suggested a late night stroll under the lights of the Eiffel Tower, where he proposed.

We decided to go for a civil ceremony and were fortunate enough to be married by my cousin, Jade. This was a surprise for everyone, as we managed to keep it a secret right up until the ceremony began.

The theme of our day was rustic and relaxed. We took our inspiration from the beautiful rustic barn and rural setting of our venue and the time of year. We loved the venue’s charm, log fires and outdoor fire pit (great for toasting marshmallows!) and its relaxed, informal vibe.

Flowers were so important to us. My grandparents owned a florist shop, my dad and step mum have their own plant shop and my sister runs her own floristry. Simon’s grandfather also used to have his own flower stall at the market, so you could say blooms are in our blood! We were very lucky as my sister provided all of our flowers for us as a wedding gift.

My absolute favourite flower has to be the dahlia, from the dark burgundy red, hot pinks and oranges, to the palest of blush, like the stunning ‘Café au Lait’. The majority of them were grown in my nan’s back garden. We used blush coloured roses such as David Austin’s ‘Juliet’, ‘Quicksand’, and a spray rose called ‘Bombastic’ to add a softer element.

We also used plenty of orange ranunculus for a vibrant touch. Hydrangea and pampas grass were chosen for the urns, which were great for creating height.

Our cake was made by my very talented Nanny Denise. We wanted something quite simple and white to allow the fresh flowers to add the colour. We used sedum, dahlias, chocolate cosmos, eucalyptus and a few scabiosa seed heads, with a small piece of ivy around the bottom.

For our favours we had sparklers, which were a big hit with the kids. We also had a lot of fun sourcing items from antique fairs and car boot sales, such as the vessels for the table arrangements, chalk boards and knitted blankets for when it got chilly in the evening.

One of our favourite moments was just after the ceremony. We had a few moments where it was just the two of us, enjoying a glass of champagne alone.

My tip for brides-to-be: The planning can get overwhelming, so don’t be afraid to ask for help from family and friends. They will be more than happy to help and it is a great way of taking some of the weight off of your shoulders.
