10 things we bet you didn't know about the wedding of Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Written by Katie Byrne, published 2nd feb 2017

We take a look back at the couple's iconic 2008 nuptials...

LAST UPDATED: 2 February 2017

Last night saw Beyoncé announce some HUGE news: she's pregnant! With twins! Whilst the Internet effectively broke over the news - which Queen Bey announced via a gorgeous flower-filled, veil-topped Instagram post (see below) - the big reveal got us thinking about her 2008 wedding to Jay-Z.

Whilst the couple's spring '08 nuptials were kept under very tight wraps, there are a few details we do know about the Crazy In Love pair's celebration. Read on to find out more!

#1 Jay-Z liked it so he put a ring on it - yep, we went there! Whilst we're not entirely sure when the couple got engaged, we do know it happened in Paris, where Jay-Z presented Beyoncé with a breathtaking 18-carat Asscher-cut diamond, worth an estimated $5 million and designed by celebrity favourite Lorraine Schwartz (who also created Kim Kardashian's jaw-dropping engagement ring). Speaking recently about the French capital, Jay revealed it was important to the Carter family for another very important reason: "It’s special to us because we got engaged here, and this is where Blue Ivy was conceived".

#2 Beyoncé's mum, Tina Knowles, chose her daughter's strapless wedding gown. Tina recently revealed Bey wasn't 'that excited' about the gown her mum chose, admitting during an interview with The Today Show: "[Beyoncé] came back one day and she said, "you know, when my daughter gets married I'm gonna let her pick out her own dress". Burn. Tina added: "Maybe she wasn't so excited about it at the time, but she's a sweetheart".

#3 The couple tied the knot on 4 April 2008, exchanging their vows in front of 40 or so guests, exchanging their vows in front of a romantic willow arch. The venue? With privacy a key factor in their planning, the musical superstars opted to tie the knot at Jay-Z's 13,500-sq.-ft. penthouse apartment in uber-cool NYC neighbourhood Tribeca.

Celebrity first dance songs

#4 Emotions ran high at the celebration, with a guest telling People magazine at the time: "It was a very emotional wedding—lots of crying—and really very spiritual". (Now's probably not the time to make that '...even the cake was in tiers' joke.)

#5 The couple's first dance song was, naturally, the hit that first bought them together, 2003 smash hit Crazy In Love. All together now: 'Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh, no, no...'

#6 The blooms of choice for the lavish celebrations? A reported 70,000 white dendrobium orchids, flown in especially from Thailand. We can only imagine how incredible that fragrance was... The bride obviously has a thing for flowers - after all, last night's pregnancy announcement also featured endless heavenly blooms!

#7 Keen to keep the nuptials underwraps, Bey and Jay reportedly asked guests to leave their BlackBerries at home (yup - no scope for guests to BBM each other between the ceremony and reception here).

#8 After the wedding, Bey and Jay got matching 'IV' tattoos on their ring fingers. Why? Four is a significant number for the couple: Beyoncé's birthday is September 4, Jay Z's is December 4 and they got married on the fourth day of the fourth month. SO MUCH SYMOLISM.

#9 There are no photos from the nuptials - but a smattering of video footage from the celebration has been shared.

#10 The pair reportedly renewed their wedding vows in autumn 2014 whilst travelling around Europe; find out more here.
