An autumnal wedding held at Rotherwick Village Hall in Hampshire

An autumnal wedding held at Rotherwick Village Hall in Hampshire

Written by Katie Byrne

Jonathan and Eloise tied the knot in a seasonal celebration, complete with gorgeous Halloween twists

October is a special month for us both, so we set our wedding date for 31st October, giving ourselves two years to plan our dream wedding. Since Eloise is a country girl at heart, we decided to incorporate that with autumnal ideas and a hint of Halloween.

We wanted something different from the get-go. Once we settled on Halloween and the countryside as our two theme influencers, we looked at a few old houses and barns. Rotherwick Village Hall ticked all the boxes. Being a designer and a hair and make-up artist, we wanted to use our skills to create our perfect day. We pretty much did all of it ourselves - with lots of help from friends and family!

The architect that designed Rotherwick village hall is actually the same as Tilley Hall down the road, it fitted the country feel and slightly Halloween look perfectly!

With all the bits we collected over two years, seeing it come together the day before and people's reactions to it was amazing - we wanted something we would remember forever with little touches everywhere that made it very 'JC and Eloise'.

We wanted a magical experiance. We're big fans of Disney World and the theme parks there, so we wanted to create that level of immersion on the day. From the skeleton in the ticket room to the hand-tied cutlery topped with leaves on the tables and the giant faux spider at the bar, there were special finishing touches everywhere!

The rustic industrial vibe played a big part in it, as well as various autumnal themes and Halloween. Dark burgundy was chosen for the colurs and it worked perfectly with the colurs of the falling leaves and pumpkins at that time of year it also inspired my choice of tartan for the day, Lindsay Modern.

I chose a wedding dress that I didn't think I would wear - but you don't know until you try it on! It was by Caroline Castigliano and simple, timeless and made me feel really special. Jonathan wore a tailor-made kilt with a blue jacket and waist coat, which he matched with tartan shoes and a red woollen tie.

We hung LED festoon lighting, which worked amazingly with the paper lanterns. We had 15 carved pumpkins as the bases for our tablecentres. We had originally planned hessian runners but decided to use leaves instead as a touch of colour to the table (fake) ones of Amazon that looked pretty realistic.

I designed a place mat for each of our table settings that had the continuation of the fonts and theme of our wedding invites, as well as giving guests the opportunity to 'adopt' a pumpkin and a recipe for pumpkin soup. By encouraging guests to take home our uncarved decorations, we managed to cut-down on quite a bit of waste.

For wedding favours, we gifted our guests mason jars with their names on, which also doubled as their personal glasses for the self-service bar at our evening reception.

We wanted a naked wedding cake primarily because we both love Victorian sponge - and both loathe traditional fruit cake! We served it later in the day, along with the evening buffet, and it went down a storm.

When it came to the flowers, we wanted displays that were big and wild, with lots of impact and autumnal colours. Our florist came up trumps!

Steal their style!
