A yellow-and-grey Californian wedding, with lemon-inspired decorations

A yellow-and-grey Californian wedding, with lemon-inspired decorations

Alexa and Eric celebrated their nuptials in a romantic outdoor fiesta

Alexa, 23, a model and wholesale manager for an accessories company, and Eric, 25, an account manager, married at The Century House, followed by a reception at Handles Gastropub, Pleasanton, California.

Our ceremony took place in a 19th century city-owned building. It was very quaint and cosy, and felt like the perfect place for us to exchange vows.

We wanted our 80 friends and family to feel like they were at a summer barbecue for the party, so we used the garden at Handles Gastropub for our reception and allowed the backyard setting to inspire our theme.

I've always loved yellow and grey, so we used this palette for our outfits and decor.

While browsing white maxi dresses on the Internet, I came across my gown from a label called For Love & Lemons. It was a backless halter-neck number with a plunging neckline and daisy crochet detail, which I paired with a crown of rosemary and a bouquet of garden roses, feverfew, silver brunia and senecio.

My bridesmaids wore grey dresses in different styles and shades, while Eric kept his look casual in a pair of chinos, white shirt and a yellow gingham tie.

We played on the yellow and grey colour theme by adding lots of lemons to our decor! We lined the aisle with them and served fresh lemonade to guests on arrival from our homemade stand - a shabby-chic-style chest of drawers.

For our transport, we hired a vintage fire truck - my dad is a retired firefighter, so we thought it would be a nice idea. Not only did it mean a lot to us and to him, but no one we knew had ever had one at their wedding, so it was a really good send-off after the reception.

We dressed our tables with white tablecloths and added yellow napkins for a pop of colour. The tablecentres were an assortment of vases, filled with flowers and herbs.

I wanted the cake to look homemade, so we teamed it with fresh whipped cream and strawberries to evoke a summer garden party vibe.

My favourite moment: Once we'd taken photos of the cake, we had fun smashing it and plastering it onto everyone's faces. It was very spontaneous but a lot of fun!

My advice for brides-to-be: Don't get caught up in others' opinions - stay true to the look you want for the day.

Steal their style!
