Enjoy all the beauty the Aegean has to offer in Skiathos...
There are few places in the world we’d rather be than sipping a pina colada on a private beach, toes in the sand, eyes closed, listening to the sound of crashing waves. Thankfully, you don’t need to travel half way around the world to find such a dream spot: some are just a mere three-hour flight away.
Cue the Kassandra Bay Resort & Spa on the beautiful, untouched island of Skiathos, Greece. Nestled on the south side of the island, with lush green surroundings and – you’ve guessed it – a killer beachside location, it’s one of only two five-star resorts in the whole of Skiathos.
The resort is just a hop, skip and jump from the airport (or four kilometers) and a ten-minute drive from the old town. The rooms – most of which have an ocean view – are bright, modern and spacious. If you’re craving ultimate luxury, check yourself into the KB Suites, which come with separate living areas, outdoor Jacuzzis or private pools.
At night, the whitewashed pool bar becomes a cocktail haven, offering some seriously heady concoctions. Our highlights? We may have enjoyed an espresso martini or two (the details are still pretty hazy) and we’ve yet to find anywhere in the world that offers a better twist on the classic pina colada than this place.
Although the weather is usually pretty darn amazing and sunshine is a given, we did have some spectacular storms (unusual for our September trip, we were told). There really is only one way to enjoy the stunning views – be it a magical sunset or an amazing lightning show – take place over the glittering Aegean Sea: G&T in hand, lounging on the shaded terrace of your uppermost deluxe KB Suite.
When you’re not sun worshipping on the stretch of exclusive beach or lounging around your private pool, venture into the cobbled town of Skiathos. Dip in and out of the cute, family-run tavernas for traditional home-cooked Greek food, meander down to the bustling port (which is particularly buzzing at night, too) and browse the independent boutiques for souvenirs to take home.
Skiathos has long been a destination for seasoned travellers – but the island first came to the fore with the release of Mamma Mia in 2008. Some of the film was shot on the island – and very proud of it they are, too. OK, so the inhabitants might not be as all-singing and all-dancing as they are in the movie, but the sky is just as blue and the views just as glorious. And if you can bring yourself away from the hotel for a day, Kassandra Bay can organise a boat trip to nearby Skopelos, where the majority of it was filmed.
We also tried the spa (where else are you going to get him to agree to a facial?), which is, quite simply, made for honeymooners. Allowing just two people at a time, it’s as private as it gets, with a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, relaxation area and two therapy rooms. If you need to wind down even more (although, you’ll be practically horizontal by now), guests can also enjoy scenic yoga and Pilates by the pool.
Our verdict? This place is sublime. TAKE US BACK.
